Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, has officially withdrawn from the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) ongoing “Thank You” tour, citing serious security threats to his supporters.

The decision comes in the wake of a violent incident at a recent tour event held at the Pentecost Church in Bantama, Kumasi, where a student from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), affiliated with Unity Hall, was stabbed during a confrontation.

The victim, a member of Unity Hall’s Jama group, had been invited by Agyapong’s team to perform at the event. According to eyewitness accounts, a wealthy associate of Agyapong offered money to the Jama group. However, a group of heavily built, gun-wielding men—believed to be affiliated with the NPP—allegedly stormed the scene and forcibly seized the money.

A scuffle ensued, during which gunshots were reportedly fired. One member of the Jama group was stabbed in the chaos and was rushed to the emergency unit of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital. He is currently receiving treatment.

Kennedy Agyapong and his team have since filed an official complaint with the Kumasi Central Police Command.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Agyapong confirmed his decision to pull out of the tour, citing the inability to ensure the safety of his team.

“Because of what happened yesterday, myself and my team want to pull out. Lives are being threatened, and I don’t think I can protect my team enough. So we want out so that Dr. Bawumia can continue his campaign,” he stated.
