Ho, April 18, 2025 — Residents and business owners in Ho and several parts of the Volta Region are grappling with persistent power outages that have stretched on for nearly a month, disrupting daily life and threatening livelihoods.
The electricity challenges—marked by sudden blackouts and prolonged low voltage—have affected both daytime and nighttime activities, leaving many in the region frustrated and desperate for relief.
Small and medium-sized businesses have been hit especially hard. Enterprises reliant on cold storage, digital operations, and consistent lighting are struggling to stay afloat. Some operators have turned to fuel-powered generators, but the rising cost of fuel is making this an unsustainable option.
“I now spend over GH₵150 on fuel every two days just to keep my salon running,” said Sumaila Ahmed, a barber at Ho Bankoe.
“Every day, I’m forced to choose between running a generator and making a profit,” lamented Seyram Foe-Ahorney, who runs a cold store near Ho Technical University.
Households are also suffering the effects of the unreliable power supply. Many residents report spoiled food, damaged electrical appliances, and growing anxiety due to the lack of reliable electricity.
In response to the escalating crisis, the Volta Regional Minister visited the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) regional office in Ho, followed by a visit to GRIDCo in Akosombo. During the visits, he expressed deep dissatisfaction with the situation, citing the severe impact on businesses and homes.
Ms. Christina Jatoe-Kaleo, ECG’s Volta Regional General Manager, attributed the erratic supply to voltage fluctuations from GRIDCo. She assured the Minister and residents that both ECG and GRIDCo are working together to restore stability and improve service delivery in the region.
As the power challenges persist, residents are calling for clear timelines, better communication, and lasting solutions to ensure stable and reliable electricity across the Volta Region.
