Former Finance Minister Mohammed Amin Adam has stated that the controversial betting tax introduced under the Akufo-Addo administration was never enforced before the government left office.
His remarks come in response to Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson's announcement during the presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement that the current administration has abolished multiple taxes, including the Betting Tax and E-Levy.
Speaking at a Minority press conference, Dr. Amin Adam dismissed the claim, arguing that it is misleading for the government to claim credit for scrapping a tax that was never implemented.
"Betting tax that they said they have abolished, we never collected Betting Tax. So to come and tell Ghanaians that you have abolished something that you have not implemented is to deceive the people of Ghana," he asserted.
The former New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration had introduced a 10% withholding tax on betting and lottery winnings, a policy that sparked strong opposition from industry players and the public. However, Dr. Amin Adam insists that his government never began collecting revenue from it before leaving office.
During the 2024 election campaign, then-NPP presidential candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia pledged to remove the Betting Tax and E-Levy if elected. He reiterated this commitment at the party’s manifesto launch in Takoradi on August 18, 2024.
Social media users have since reacted to Dr. Amin Adam’s comments, with some questioning the previous administration's stance on taxation and others debating the impact of these policies on Ghana’s economy.
