An Accra High Court has sentenced Emmanuel Sakyi Afriyie, a former contract worker at ABSA Bank, to 10 years in prison for stealing GH¢1.2 million from bank staff accounts, including those of a deceased judge and a former Inspector General of Police (IGP).
How He Was Caught
Afriyie, 25, was arrested at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) on June 4, 2023, while attempting to flee to Dubai with his girlfriend, Ivy Okertchiri.
Investigations revealed he stole the money over two months by secretly recording his boss’s password on her mobile phone.
He then used this information to hack customer accounts and transfer funds to his own accounts and 17 accomplices.
Lavish Spending & Charges
He used the stolen money to buy a Toyota Camry and an iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Faced 13 charges, including conspiracy to commit theft, falsification of accounts, and forgery of documents.
Pleaded not guilty, but the court found him guilty and sentenced him.
Meanwhile, his alleged accomplice, Cecil Nyamesem Agyarkwa, was acquitted and discharged. However, some other accomplices were arrested and granted bail.
