Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and MP for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has defended his decision to stand as surety for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, who was released from EOCO custody on Monday, June 2, 2025.
Dr. Acheampong submitted the necessary documentation to meet the GH₵50 million bail requirement, helping secure Wontumi’s release after nearly a week in detention.
Speaking to journalists, the former minister emphasized solidarity and party unity as the driving force behind his action.
“It serves us no good. What is important is that one of us was in trouble. He was arrested, and we needed, as part of the legal process, to provide surety for bail, which has been done. He has been released, and now we wait for the next steps,” he stated.
Chairman Wontumi had been in EOCO custody since May 27, under investigation for serious allegations including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. Although his legal team satisfied bail terms by May 30, his release was delayed by a pending High Court motion challenging the bail conditions. The motion was withdrawn on June 2, clearing the way for his release.
The Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, previously hinted that the ongoing probe could link Chairman Wontumi to a broader international organised crime network.
As investigations continue, Chairman Wontumi is expected to cooperate fully with authorities.
