The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Adjei Awatey, has revealed that authorities have seized 10 excavators from illegal mining operators as part of renewed efforts to curb the ongoing menace of galamsey in the region.
Galamsey—illegal small-scale gold mining—has long posed severe environmental threats across Ghana, including pollution of major rivers like the Pra, Ankobra, and Offin, widespread deforestation, loss of arable land, and health hazards for local communities.
Despite past government interventions such as Operation Vanguard and Galamstop, the practice continues to thrive, driven by economic hardship, lax enforcement, political interference, and soaring global gold prices.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, Minister Awatey said the seizure was part of a focused operation aimed at dismantling the growing threat of illegal mining in the region.
“We know that these things cannot be achieved without our work against illegal mining and other distractions from the company’s activity. We are embarking on our small operations and have seized about 10 excavators,” she stated.
The Minister underscored the urgent need for sustained commitment in tackling galamsey, emphasizing its importance in protecting the environment and ensuring sustainable development in the region.
