Being a trotro mate might not be the first job that comes to mind when thinking about high-paying work, but for many, it’s a reliable and steady source of income.

One trotro mate, speaking from his daily experience, explains how his hard work and dedication help him make up to 7,800 cedis a month.

"I make 260 cedis every single day," says Kwame, a trotro mate working in Accra.

"If I work every day in the month, that adds up to 7,800 cedis."

That’s a significant amount, especially when you consider how consistent the income is. But it’s not all easy money—being a trotro mate comes with its own challenges.

The job requires early mornings and long hours, usually from sunrise to sunset. "I start my day as early as 5 a.m.," Kwame shares.

"I work hard, and I hustle, ensuring the passengers are well-served and that the bus is always full. If I don’t work, I don’t make money."

It’s clear that to earn this amount, the trotro mate needs to stay on top of things and be active throughout the day.

While the pay may sound impressive, there’s more to the job than just collecting fares. "You have to deal with a lot of passengers—some are friendly, some are not," Kwame continues.

"You also need to make sure the driver is following the route, and sometimes you have to handle conflicts in the vehicle. It can get stressful, but it’s all part of the job."

Despite the challenges, many people, like Kwame, find it rewarding.

"It’s not the easiest job, but it gives me enough money to take care of my family and pay the bills," he says.

For those looking to make a decent living, becoming a trotro mate can be a solid choice.

Of course, it’s not just about the money—it’s about the lifestyle. "You have to love the hustle," Kwame adds.

"There’s no room to be lazy. If you want to make money as a trotro mate, you’ve got to be dedicated and willing to work hard every day."
