THE WORLD IN THE CHURCH: A DEPUTATION AGAINST FASHIONABLE CHRISTIANITY

The tragedy of the modern Church is not that sinners enter its gates, but that sin now dictates its fashion. The apostles warned, “Be not conformed to this world” (Romans 12:2), yet many have stitched conformity into their garments and called it “cultural relevance.” When churches employ the bait of fashion and luxury to attract the unsaved, they betray their divine commission and invite the yeast of worldliness to ferment their sanctity.

The Apostolic Fathers, whose faith was forged under persecution, clothed themselves with simplicity and humility. Clement of Rome exhorted believers to “walk in modesty and contentment, avoiding the pomp of vanity.” The Church Fathers echoed this wisdom: Chrysostom thundered, “The covering of the body is to preserve chastity, not to display pride.” They discerned early what the modern pulpiteer forgets—that holiness, not trend, is the ornament of the saints.

The Reformers likewise cried for purity of worship and life. Calvin warned that “where the gospel is made to serve pleasure, there Christ is banished from His temple.” The Puritans followed with austere devotion; Richard Baxter urged Christians to “adorn the gospel, not yourselves.” They knew the peril: that the Church that courts the world will soon mirror its values.

Broda Sammy and his kind, who suppose that Christ can be marketed through glamour, are strangers to the Cross. The Church’s call is not to attract sinners by vanity but to confront them with the holy beauty of the Gospel. Salvation never comes through strategy but through proclamation. Our lifestyle is not the Gospel; it is the letter the world reads of its transforming power (2 Corinthians 3:2–3).

The Church’s attire is spiritual—woven in righteousness, purity, and humility. When sinners heard the voice of Jesus, they threw away their garments (Mark 10:50). God Himself clothed Adam and Eve anew after sin (Genesis 3:21). Christ now robes His redeemed in righteousness (Revelation 7:14). Let us therefore strip off the worldly fashion of compromise and put on the garment of light, that the Church may once again shine—not by glitter, but by grace.
