Former Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund (GIIF) Board Chairman Professor Christopher Ameyaw-Akumfi became ill at a court hearing in Accra on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, and was taken to the hospital. According to GBC, the event prompted the presiding judge to move the Sky Train case proceedings until Monday, May 26, 2025.
A trial for Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi's failing Sky Train project is pending. He is charged with financial losses to the state and criminal conspiracy. In 2019, Africa Investor Holdings Limited was paid $2 million for preliminary work on the Sky Train proposal, an urban rail project aimed at reducing traffic in Accra. The project never progressed past the planning phase, even with the money.

According to court documents, criminal investigations were launched after the $2 million was distributed without the GIIF Board's authorized authority. The Ghana Infrastructure Investment Fund provided the funding. The second accused, Professor Ameyaw-Akumfi, asserts that he approved the payment on the recommendation of Solomon Asamoah, the first accused in the case and the CEO of GIIF at the time.
Neither of the defendants has yet to provide an explanation for the usage of the money. Despite the financial investment, the Sky Train project, which was originally envisioned as a collaboration between Ghana and a South African corporation, never came to fruition.
On May 26, the case is scheduled to resume, and stakeholders and the general public will be closely monitoring any new developments.
