Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, the Chief of Army Staff, has issued a warning to those responsible for the ongoing turmoil in Bawku.

He has issued a warning that any assaults on military or civilian targets will be viewed as acts of extremism and will be dealt with with the full might of the Ghanaian military.

Maj Gen Gbetanu emphasized the military's willingness to firmly suppress violent elements during a press conference held Wednesday following a tour of the Upper East Region's conflict-prone town.
Additionally, Maj Gen Gbetanu made a direct appeal to the youth, urging them to forgo violence in favor of discussion and progress.

"Put your arms down and go back to the peaceful way. "Your future lies in building, learning, and growing your country, not in bloodshed," he stated.

The Kusaug Traditional Council received a courtesy call from the Chief of Army Staff earlier in the day. He urged cooperation between security forces and traditional leaders during the visit in order to bring peace back to the region.
In order to preserve calm in the region, he also urged chiefs to assist in controlling the youth and discouraging any hostile conduct toward military personnel.

Maj Gen Gbetanu is visiting Bawku for the first time since taking office.
