According to reports, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has directed the Kumasi Traditional Council to halt its investigation into alleged offensive statements made by Chairman Wontumi, also known as Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The Asantehene explained that Wontumi, whom he views as his grandchild, would never mistreat him or the Golden Stool, according to information from the Manhyia Palace quoted by wontumionline.com.
The report went on to say that the Asantehene refused to give anyone permission to call Wontumi over the issue and berated Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, the Bantamahene, for causing needless stress in the run-up to important occasions like the 150th anniversary of the Sagrenti War and the 25th anniversary of his coronation. The Asantehene made it clear that he did not want Manhyia and the Golden Stool to get involved in partisan political arguments.
This ruling follows Wontumi's summons by the Kumasi Traditional Council in response to alleged disparaging remarks made by him during the screening of Manhyia South parliamentary candidates. In order to handle the matter, the Council insisted that he be there together with representatives from Wontumi Radio and TV. The Council insisted that Wontumi appear, even in a wheelchair, despite the NPP's request for an extension because of his health. When an Ashanti youth organization barred Wontumi from the area, claiming that his statements disrespected the Golden Stool by claiming to have built a kingdom with police and military troops inside the Asante Kingdom, the situation intensified.
The young person responded by calling for an apology before reevaluating his acceptance in the area. The organization considered Wontumi's remarks improper and uncalled for, expressing a lack of respect for the Asantehene and the Golden Stool. The youth representative maintained that the Asantehene was the only one in the Asante Kingdom who could make such claims. Since then, the region has seen a great deal of turmoil as a result of this tragedy.
