The New Patriotic Party (NPP) government has come under heavy fire from former President John Dramani Mahama, who claims that it is encouraging massive corruption. Speaking just hours before Ghanaians cast their ballots, Mahama said corruption has weakened the country's government and exacerbated economic problems, calling it a daily occurrence under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's administration.
Mahama is using these comments as part of a larger effort to undermine the NPP's performance in government. He blamed the government for corruption and a lack of responsibility, citing a number of scandals and claims of financial mismanagement. He emphasized claims of inflated government contracts, dubious procurement methods, and misused COVID-19 monies in particular. Under the current administration, corruption has become commonplace, according to Mahama, and the results are felt by regular Ghanaians. Mahama accused the administration of failing to put the needs of the people first during a rally, urging voters to choose integrity over what he described as the NPP's dishonest tactics.
The NPP responded by rejecting Mahama's claims, claiming that the opposition was merely attempting to obtain political clout. To defend their record, party officials cited the government's anti-corruption efforts, including the creation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor and changes to public procurement. Citing corruption issues in his own administration, they also charged Mahama of hypocrisy. Mahama's remarks highlight the crucial role corruption plays in Ghanaian politics as the election draws near. Although it is unclear how these charges will affect voters, political commentators believe his approach is to cast doubt on the incumbent's character. The corruption scandal intensifies the high-stakes contest for leadership as Ghanaians get ready to cast their ballots.
