A 15% decrease in transportation costs is set to take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025, according to the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU). The decision comes after a meeting on Monday, May 19, 2025, between the National Executive of the GPRTU and Joseph Bukari Nikpe, Minister of Transportation. According to Abbas Ibrahim Moro, the public relations officer who verified the change, it was made in direct response to an 18% decrease in fuel costs. He told Accra-based 3news, "We just met with the Minister of Transport and we have agreed that, effective Saturday, May 25, transport fares must be reduced by 15%." Mr. Moro clarified that this specific lowering is intended to further lessen the burden on passengers, even though the GPRTU normally bases rate adjustments on a third of any decrease in fuel prices.
"In order to reflect the fuel price trend, we chose to use 15% of the fuel price reduction this time instead of the usual one-third. We anticipate that our competitors in the spare parts sector will do the same and lower their costs. "We want to make it clear that we implemented the 15% reduction before waiting for the other elements of our cost build-up to decrease," he continued. He also issued a warning that union members who disregard the mandate will be disciplined. "You have no choice but to comply if your union has made a decision," he said.
