Rugby fever swept through Ghana over the weekend as the GRCC Regional 7s tournaments kicked off simultaneously in the Central and Northern regions, marking an exhilarating start to the national rugby calendar. With passion, resilience, and teamwork on full display, teams battled for early dominance in the campaign — and the results did not disappoint.
Central Region: Oguaa Warriors Shine Bright
At Cape Coast Technical College, the Central Region saw six electrifying matches featuring Griffons Empire SC, Stallions RFC, Dominion Leaders SC, and the sensational Oguaa Warriors RFC. The Warriors were nothing short of unstoppable, finishing the day with three commanding victories — including a stunning 42-28 triumph over Griffons Empire SC.
From their opening 28-14 win against Dominion Leaders SC to their overwhelming 35-5 victory over the Stallions, the Oguaa Warriors played with cohesion and flair, establishing themselves as early favorites in the region.
Meanwhile, Griffons Empire showed promise, notably overpowering Dominion Leaders SC 28-7, and earning a hard-fought 17-17 draw with the Stallions. Dominion Leaders also picked up a consolation win, defeating the Stallions 28-14 in Match 5.

Northern Region: Northern Lions Roar

Up north at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium in Tamale, Northern Lions Rugby Club lit up the pitch with a perfect record of three wins, emerging as the team to beat. Their victories over Dakpemah RFC, Rocks Rugby Club, and Tamale Warriors highlighted their strength and discipline, particularly their narrow but decisive 17-15 win over the resilient Tamale Warriors in the final game.

Rocks Rugby Club also impressed with two wins out of three, including a tight 12-10 win over Dakpemah and a solid 20-10 triumph over Tamale Warriors. The Warriors, though competitive and spirited, managed only one win — a 17-10 result against Dakpemah — showing potential that could prove vital in later stages.

A Growing Force in Ghana Sports

These early performances underscore the rapid growth of rugby in Ghana. From passionate grassroots players to organized club structures, the future of the sport looks promising. The GRCC Regional 7s not only provides a platform for athletic excellence but also strengthens the bonds between communities, youth, and the values of sportsmanship.
As Week 1 comes to a close, excitement builds for what lies ahead. One thing is certain: Ghanaian rugby is on the rise, and the journey has just begun.
