The University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has strengthened its commitment to quality education, global partnerships and youth development following high-level discussions with a delegation from Denmark’s University College Lillebælt (UCL) on academic, research and sports collaboration.

The engagement reflects UEW’s broader effort to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) through international cooperation.

Welcoming the delegation, UEW Registrar, Mrs. Ekua Abedi-Boafo, described the visit as timely and aligned with UEW’s mandate as Ghana’s premier teacher education institution. She emphasised that international partnerships are critical to improving teaching quality, expanding research output and equipping students with global perspectives.

She noted that UEW is focused on collaborations that promote staff and student exchange, joint research and knowledge sharing, adding that the engagement provides an opportunity for both institutions to identify shared priorities before formalising an agreement.

Providing background, Prof. Charles K. Assuah, Dean of UEW’s Centre for International Programmes, explained that the partnership evolved from years of academic engagement between UEW and Danish scholars. He described the current visit as a key step toward formalising cooperation through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

The Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Esther Yeboah Danso-Wiredu, stressed the need to expedite the MoU to guide collaboration in joint research, comparative education studies and co-authored publications, which would strengthen evidence-based education policy and academic visibility.

Highlighting the social value of the partnership, Prof. Frimpong Kaakyire Duku, Principal of the College for Distance and e-Learning, described the collaboration as a mutual commitment that supports inclusive learning and sports development, especially as UEW prepares to host the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games.

From the Danish side, Mr. Claus Ottesen, Senior Lecturer at UCL, affirmed his institution’s readiness to collaborate on education policy research and European-funded projects, including initiatives on physically active learning in schools, which support student health and learning outcomes.

Ms. Katrine Berteisen, Senior Lecturer from UC South Denmark, highlighted opportunities for comparative research between Ghana and Denmark in physical education, with the potential for peer-reviewed international publications.

The Danish delegation also donated sports equipment to support UEW’s sports programmes, reinforcing the link between education, physical activity and student well-being.

Commending the initiative, Prof. Fred Yao Gbagbo, Dean of the Faculty of Health, Allied Sciences and Home Economics Education, described the collaboration as timely for strengthening research capacity and global engagement.

The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to fast-track the MoU and deepen faculty-level collaboration, ensuring the partnership delivers measurable outcomes in education quality, research innovation and youth development, in line with the SDGs.
