The Minister for Roads and Highways, Hon. Kwame Governs Agbodza, has engaged the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Sam Nartey George, and other key stakeholders to address the recurring damage to fibre optic cables during road construction and rehabilitation works.

The meeting focused on improving coordination among road agencies, contractors and telecommunications providers to prevent cable cuts that can disrupt communication services.

The engagement highlighted the importance of proper planning, timely information sharing and effective collaboration before and during road projects.

Fibre optic cables are critical to Ghana’s digital infrastructure, supporting internet connectivity and other communication services. Damage to these cables can affect service delivery and inconvenience individuals, businesses and institutions that depend on reliable connectivity.

The discussions therefore underscored the need for road agencies and contractors to work closely with telecommunications providers to identify existing cable routes and take the necessary precautions before excavation and other construction activities begin.

As Ghana continues to expand its road network and digital infrastructure, stronger coordination between the two sectors will be essential to protect public infrastructure, minimise service disruptions and ensure road projects proceed smoothly.

The key message is clear: road development and digital connectivity must go hand in hand. Protecting fibre optic infrastructure should be an integral part of road planning and construction, not an afterthought.
