The Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC) Superannuation Fund has called for stronger governance, prudent investments and sustainable management of pension funds as contributors seek greater security for their retirement.

The call was made at the Fund’s 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, at the GAEC Auditorium in Accra.

Held under the theme “Building Resilient and Sustainable Pension Funds for Lasting Retirement Security,” the meeting brought together contributors, trustees, fund managers, auditors and other stakeholders to review the performance of the scheme and discuss its long-term sustainability.

The discussions placed emphasis on the need to protect contributors’ retirement savings while ensuring that the Fund remains capable of meeting its obligations to both current and future members.

Opening the meeting, the Chairperson of the AGM and Director-General of GAEC, Prof. Samuel Boakye Dampare, commended the trustees, fund managers and other stakeholders for their efforts in managing the scheme.

He noted that pension fund management comes with significant challenges and stressed the need for a long-term approach to ensure that the Fund remains strong enough to meet its obligations.

Prof. Dampare urged fund managers to adopt innovative but prudent investment strategies while maintaining sound governance and complying with relevant legal, regulatory and professional requirements.

He also called for greater transparency, integrity and accountability in the management of the scheme.

According to him, innovation should also be used to improve services to contributors without putting their retirement savings at unnecessary risk.

“We need innovative financial products, sustainable and competitive interest-rate propositions, and technology-enabled services that solve real problems for contributors,” he said.

The Chairman of the Superannuation Management Committee (SMC) and Deputy Director-General of GAEC, Prof. Francis Hasford, said the AGM remains an important platform for accountability, transparency and participation in the management of the Fund.

He explained that the meeting allows contributors to review the previous year’s activities, consider reports, engage directly with the Board of Trustees and contribute to decisions about the future direction of the scheme.

Prof. Hasford stressed that the long-term strength of a pension scheme depends not only on investment performance and product management, but also on effective governance, transparency and active participation by members.

He therefore encouraged contributors to take an active interest in discussions and decisions concerning the scheme.

Delivering the closing remarks, the Co-Chairperson of the AGM and Director-General of the Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA), Prof. Francis Otoo, urged fund managers to continue exploring innovative approaches that can strengthen the scheme and improve contributors’ confidence.

The AGM also provided an opportunity for contributors to engage directly with trustees and fund managers on the performance, governance and investment outlook of the Fund.

For contributors, the discussions underline an important reality: retirement security is not only about saving for the future, but also about how those savings are governed, invested and protected over time.

The meeting ended with a renewed commitment among stakeholders to strengthen the Fund and safeguard the retirement security of both current and future contributors.
