The Government of Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to justice following the tragic death of Nana Agyei Ahyia, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, taking decisive steps to ensure transparency, accountability, and closure for the bereaved family.

In a show of state responsibility and compassion, the Foreign Minister invited the family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs earlier today, where he personally conveyed the government’s condolences and provided a detailed briefing on actions taken so far.

Hon. Ablakwa disclosed that immediately after the incident, the Ministry dispatched a fact-finding mission from Ghana’s Embassy in Germany, which holds concurrent accreditation to Latvia, to independently gather information on the circumstances surrounding Nana Agyei Ahyia’s death. The mission has since submitted a preliminary report to the Ministry.

Crucially, Latvian authorities have confirmed that investigations into the case remain ongoing, a development that underscores the need for sustained diplomatic pressure and vigilance to ensure no stone is left unturned.

Demonstrating government’s resolve to move beyond routine diplomatic exchanges, Hon. Ablakwa announced that he has formally notified the Latvian government of his decision to travel to Latvia to engage directly with his counterpart and investigators handling the case.

In a significant step toward transparency and family inclusion, the Foreign Minister revealed that the imminent delegation to Latvia will include representatives of Nana Agyei Ahyia’s family, ensuring that the voices of the bereaved are not sidelined in the pursuit of justice.

To further safeguard credibility and independence, the Government of Ghana will engage independent experts to analyse all investigative findings, particularly the expected final report from Latvian authorities, to guide Ghana’s next course of action in the interest of justice.

This case has reignited calls for stronger protection of Ghanaians living and working abroad. Hon. Ablakwa reiterated that the life of every Ghanaian matters, regardless of where they reside, and that the state has a duty to demand answers when a citizen’s life is lost under unclear circumstances.

As the investigations continue, government’s message is clear: justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia will not be compromised, and Ghana will continue to pursue the truth through diplomatic, legal, and moral means.
