Professor Mahmud Sharif Khalid, an Economic Advisor at the Office of the Vice President, has voiced his opinion that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo should voluntarily step down amid ongoing debates about her potential removal from office.
His comments come in the wake of a Global InfoAnalytics poll showing that a majority of Ghanaians favor the Chief Justice's removal.
Appearing on Channel One TV's "The Big Issue" on Saturday, April 19, Prof. Khalid shared his perspective on the matter, saying, "If I were her, given the conventions and past occurrences, I would have honorably resigned and walked away. I wouldn’t even stay to fuel this drama."
He emphasized that similar situations have been witnessed in the past, underscoring the historical precedents for such actions.
Referring to the dismissal of Charlotte Osei, the former Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Khalid drew parallels between her case and the current controversy, noting that both positions share comparable conditions of service and stature to that of a Court of Appeals judge.
"This has happened before; it is nothing new under the sun," he remarked, questioning why the issue remains a subject of discussion. His statements add to the growing discourse on the Chief Justice's future in the face of public opinion and political scrutiny.
