The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released the provisional results of the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school candidates, with a cautionary note to thousands of students whose results have been affected by irregularities.
In a press statement dated August 23, 2025, WAEC confirmed that results have been dispatched to schools through Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Directors of Education. Candidates may also access their results online via the Council’s official portal, www.waecgh.org
Candidate Statistics
This year’s BECE registered 603,328 candidates, 297,250 males and 306,078 females from 20,395 schools nationwide.
The exams, conducted at 2,237 centres, recorded 2,526 absentees. Among the candidates were 72 with visual impairments, 239 with hearing impairments, and 161 who required other forms of special accommodations.
Cancellation and Withholding of Results
Following investigations into malpractice during the examination and the marking of scripts, the 36th Meeting of the Final Awards and Examiners’ Appointment Committee approved sanctions. The actions taken include:
Subject results of 718 candidates cancelled
Entire results of 177 candidates cancelled
Subject results of 1,240 candidates withheld
Entire results of 93 candidates withheld
In total, 895 results have been cancelled and 1,333 withheld. WAEC further disclosed that subject results from 119 schools have been cancelled, while results from 87 schools are still under investigation. The outcome of these reviews will be announced by September 6, 2025.
Guidance for Affected Candidates
Candidates whose results have been withheld or cancelled can visit https://irreg.waec.org
or use the withheld/cancelled results button on the WAEC website for details. The platform will explain the reasons behind the action and provide guidance on next steps. School heads can also access this information using their official logins.
Warning Against Fraudsters
WAEC cautioned students and the general public to beware of fraudsters who claim they can upgrade results for a fee. The Council emphasised that its results are secure, tamper-proof, and verifiable.
Appreciation to Stakeholders
In closing, WAEC expressed gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, security agencies, school authorities, invigilators, examiners, and all stakeholders for their contribution to the smooth conduct of the 2025 BECE and the release of results.
