A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Communications team, Hamza Suhuyini Sayibu has stated that Dr Mahamudu Bawumia is driven by self-interest rather than the interests of the NPP suggesting that resignation would have been a more honorable response if he truly wanted to distance himself from the past government's decisions.

He said this following his recent attribution of the NPP’s loss to arrogance of power and policies he purportedly opposed whilst in government during the ongoing thank-you tour.

Sayibu said this on Metro TV’s Good morning, Ghana show on April 29, 2025, monitored by GhanaWeb.

“If Dr Mahamudu Bawumia actually wanted us to distance him from the mess of the last 8 years, the most honorable thing he ought to have done was simply to resign on the basis of principle and call his government out”, he indicated.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) presidential candidate for 2024, has attributed the party's defeat in the recent general elections to several factors.

Speaking on the party's thank-you tour, Bawumia cited arrogance of power, the high cost of living, failure to reshuffle government officials, and controversial policies like the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) and the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) as key reasons for the loss.

According to Bawumia, the NPP's inability to listen and respond to concerns, internal divisions, and ineffective campaigning in crucial regions also contributed to the defeat.

He noted that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) effectively used the NPP's internal conflicts against them.
