Ghana has lauded the European Union's (EU) unwavering support in strengthening security and stability across the West African sub-region, amidst growing concerns over terrorism and cross-border threats.

Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang emphasized the significance of this partnership during a formal ceremony marking the signing of a new security and defence agreement between Ghana and the EU.

The agreement is set to deepen cooperation in critical areas such as counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and capacity building for security agencies.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang underscored the importance of sustained international collaboration in tackling emerging security challenges, noting that Ghana has benefited significantly from EU-backed programmes designed to enhance national and regional security frameworks.

The Vice President highlighted the EU's support for Ghana under the European Peace Facility and the EU Security and Defence Initiative, citing over 30 security-related projects addressing conflicts, counterterrorism, border management, maritime security, and cyber security.

Additionally, the EU Security and Defence Initiative in the Gulf of Guinea has conducted approximately 40 training sessions for Ghana's military and civilian security actors, while providing equipment for these forces.

These initiatives have played a crucial role in enhancing Ghana's ability to respond effectively to evolving security threats, particularly in the face of increasing instability in parts of the Sahel region. The specialised training provided by the EU has significantly improved the skills and preparedness of Ghanaian soldiers and security personnel engaged in counterterrorism operations, the Vice President noted.
