The Ashanti Regional Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, has criticized the immediate past Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, for alleged bias against the NPP in government regarding police recruitment slots.

Speaking on Wontumi FM, Paul Yandoh claimed that Dampare allocated up to five times more police recruitment slots to John Mahama, then an opposition leader, while giving a significantly lower number to the then-governing NPP.

"What pains me very much about Dampare's issue is how he dealt with the NPP on police recruitment. We had evidence that Dampare could give John Mahama, then in opposition, 250 slots while allocating only 50 slots to the governing NPP.

"The reason why many constituency executives were unpopular in their constituencies was this issue of police recruitment. Whenever a police recruitment list was presented, it was never accepted. When one approached the police for inquiries, they were told it was with the politicians. When they contacted the politicians, they were told it was with the police. Unknown to us, Dampare was responsible for this. I repeat, 250 slots went to John Mahama," Yandoh stated.

On March 13, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama appointed COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

In a statement issued by the Minister of Government Communication, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the President, in accordance with the Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, made the appointment.

“President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, has appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the Inspector-General of Police.

He replaces COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. COP Yohuno brings forty years of experience to the position of IGP and is expected to oversee the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service,” the statement read.
