The Association of African Universities (AAU) is seeking full diplomatic status in recognition of its outstanding contributions to the continent's higher education and research landscape. This was revealed during a high-level meeting between the AAU leadership and Ghana's Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, at her office.
The AAU, founded on the pan-African vision of Ghana's first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has grown into a premier platform for academic collaboration, with a membership of over 450 universities across 46 countries. The Association's leadership expressed gratitude to the Government of Ghana for its support, particularly during Prof. Opoku-Agyemang's tenure as Minister for Education, which has facilitated the development of its permanent headquarters and institutional growth.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed her commitment to the AAU's mission, urging its leadership to intensify efforts to engage the public and stakeholders on the impactful work being undertaken by the Association.

She emphasized the need for the AAU to amplify its contributions to the continent's higher education and research landscape, thereby strengthening its advocacy and influence.
The meeting highlights the AAU's pursuit of excellence in promoting education, research, and knowledge-sharing, and its quest for diplomatic status is expected to bolster its global influence.
"Ghana remains committed to supporting the AAU's mission to transform the continent's academic landscape."
