MTN Ghana has reiterated its commitment to environmental sustainability and operational efficiency, unveiling major green initiatives during a stakeholders’ forum held in Elmina. According to the telecommunications giant, its sustainability drive is already yielding positive results for both its business operations and the environment. “From a sustainability point of view, it's impacting our operations as well as impacting the environment,” Mr. Micheal Gbewnyo, GM IAFS- Central Region added.

A key part of MTN’s sustainability strategy is the integration of solar energy across its operations. The company has commenced a solar project at its data centers and infrastructure sites to reduce dependency on the national electricity grid.

“At our head office at Ridge, we are actually saving 30% of the pressure on the national grid by going solar,” he revealed. “We are certainly going to roll that out to all the other areas where we own infrastructure.” This initiative, MTN said, is part of a broader effort to reduce carbon emissions, optimize energy efficiency, and promote the use of renewable energy sources in Ghana’s telecom industry.

MTN Ghana also announced plans to introduce e-SIM technology, which is expected to revolutionize customer experience while minimizing environmental impact. “One critical project that we are going to roll out very soon, e-SIM, will help a lot in terms of the material resources you need to produce and insert a physical SIM card,” he explained.

Mr. Micheal Gbewnyo encouraged customers to embrace the e-SIM once launched, emphasizing that it will not only enhance convenience but also reduce waste. “No need for SIM swaps. You enjoy seamless changes of devices. It’s one that nothing else will experience,” he added.

MTN’s ongoing sustainability efforts underscore the company’s dedication to aligning business growth with environmental responsibility. The combination of solar energy adoption and the introduction of e-SIM technology reflects MTN’s broader goal to reduce its ecological footprint while delivering innovative and customer-friendly solutions. As Ghana moves toward a more sustainable digital economy, MTN Ghana’s initiatives stand as a model for corporate responsibility and forward-thinking environmental action.
