JoyNews reported on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, that Hajia Amina Adam's plea to be virtually screened prior to the Ayawaso East by-election primaries was denied by the National Democratic Congress (NDC). In accordance with party regulations, the party demands that all candidates go through the screening procedure in person.
The request was made in accordance with Islamic widowhood customs by the late Ayawaso East MP's widow, Hajia Amina Adam. Her team claims that the ceremonies limit her freedom of movement and public appearances for a set amount of time. As a result, they pleaded with the party to let her take part in the online screening process.
Nevertheless, the request was turned down by the NDC's vetting committee. According to party sources, all candidates must be physically present for the by-election primaries. They said that creating an exception might create a precedent that could have an impact on internal procedures in the future.
The party went on to say that the vetting procedure is an essential part of determining an applicant's eligibility, readiness, and reliability. The committee claims that in-person communication enables members to accurately assess applicants and guarantee impartiality and openness in the selection procedure.

Public discussion has been sparked by the decision, particularly among Muslims and party sympathizers. While some have urged more consideration for cultural and religious customs, others have backed the party's stance, contending that all candidates should be subject to the same regulations.
As the party gets ready for the by-election, the NDC has advised all candidates to maintain composure and concentration in spite of the rejection. In order to win the Ayawaso East seat, party officials have stressed the importance of discipline and togetherness.
After the current MP passed away, there is a by-election in Ayawaso East, which has garnered a lot of interest within the party. The NDC insists that justice, consistency, and adherence to party regulations serve as the foundation for its internal procedures as preparations proceed.
