In a recent development, President John Dramani Mahama indicated that he will not add deputy ministers for specific ministries, sticking to his campaign promise to keep the government lean with a total of 60 ministers. This decision was announced during the Jubilee House swearing-in event for six ministers on January 22, 2025.

President Mahama stated that once ministers are confirmed by Parliament and sworn in, he will designate deputy ministers for several ministries, ensuring that the overall number of ministers remains at 60. He said: "This will make this government the leanest and, I believe, the most efficient in Ghana's history."

The six ministers sworn in during the ceremony are:

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson as Minister for Finance

Dr. Dominic Ayine as Attorney General and Minister of Justice

John Jinapor as Minister for Energy and Green Transition

Haruna Iddrisu as Minister for Education

Eric Opoku as Minister for Food and Agriculture

Governs Kwame Agbodza as Minister for Roads and Highways

This strategic step demonstrates President Mahama's commitment to building a lean and efficient government, with an emphasis on effective governance and resource optimization. The administration's goal in restricting the number of deputy ministers is to streamline operations and increase productivity across all ministries.

The decision has elicited varying reactions from the public and political commentators. Some applaud the President's commitment to cutting government spending and increasing efficiency, while others worry about the potential effects on the workload and effectiveness of ministries without deputy ministers. The effectiveness of this method will be continuously examined and assessed throughout the administration.
