Supporters of former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia have delivered a pointed rebuttal to Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, in response to comments he made during a speech in Mampong over the weekend.
Agyapong, who was defeated by Bawumia in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries in 2023, suggested that religion played a significant role in the outcome of the internal elections—a claim that Bawumia’s supporters have firmly rejected.
In a strongly articulated statement, members of Bawumia’s faction characterized Agyapong’s assertions as not only “absurd” but also an insult to the very constituents he claims to represent.

“Ken Agyapong has labeled NPP members as fools. He has questioned why impoverished individuals within the party should express their views.
“And now, he seeks to lead the same individuals he disparages? How does that make any sense?” the group passionately stated.
The team further challenged Agyapong’s claim that Bawumia’s faith was the sole reason for his primary success.
“Was it religion that led to the defeat of over 50 Christian NPP parliamentary candidates—some of whom are pastors?
“Was it religion that caused Kufuor’s loss in 1996, or Akufo-Addo’s defeats in 2008 and 2012? This assertion is ludicrous,” they commented.
They also examined the reasoning behind such a statement, emphasizing the considerable support Bawumia received from delegates of diverse religious backgrounds.
“If the party opposed a Muslim leader, how did Bawumia outpace nine Christian candidates in the first round, and five in the final primary? Or are NPP delegates suddenly all Muslims?”
The supporters of the former vice president did not hold back, accusing Agyapong of fostering division and undermining the intelligence of NPP members.
“In a party founded on tradition and merit, Ken Agyapong’s criticisms expose his inconsistency and his disregard for the established process,” one supporter remarked privately.
