Richard Ahiagbah, the Director of Communications for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has taken aim at Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, criticizing him for what he calls a hasty public accusation against former National Service Authority (NSA) officials without having secured any court convictions.
During an appearance on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, June 14, Ahiagbah raised concerns about the legal validity and ethical considerations of the Attorney General’s public announcement regarding alleged payroll fraud amounting to GH¢548 million. He cautioned that such statements could skew public perception and jeopardize the integrity of due process.
Ahiagbah posed a critical question: “If we proceed to court now, where the real test occurs, and the allegations presented by the Attorney General fail to hold up in court, what will the Attorney General have accomplished?” He continued, “He would have already convicted these individuals in the court of public opinion.”
He pointed out that the press conference conducted by the Attorney General on Friday, June 13, which implicated 12 former NSA officials, including notable names like Mustapha Ussif, Osei Assibey Antwi, and Gifty Oware-Mensah, effectively labeled them as guilty prior to any trial.
“The average Ghanaian has now formed the opinion, simply from the issuance of this notice or the press conference, that oh, those individuals — Gifty Oware, Osei-Assibey, or Mustapha Ussif — are corrupt,” Ahiagbah remarked. “That’s the impact of his actions.”
