Lecturer at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC), Mr. Tanko Zakaria Mussah, has pushed back against criticisms directed at President John Dramani Mahama over claims that he interfered with the work of the legislature.

Speaking on the matter,Mr. Mussah argued that the President was merely engaging Members of Parliament from his own political party and exercising leadership, not undermining parliamentary independence.

According to him, there should be no controversy in a president holding discussions with MPs of his party on issues of national importance.

Tanko Zakaria Mussah explained that the President’s intervention to halt the private bill being championed by the Majority Leader and the Majority Chief Whip to scrap the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) should be seen as responsible leadership rather than interference. He noted that political systems thrive on dialogue between the executive and the legislature, especially when the ruling party controls Parliament.

In his view, such engagements help align policy direction and prevent actions that could weaken key governance institutions.

He further stated that calls accusing President Mahama fails to appreciate the realities of party politics and governance.
Mr. Mussah emphasized that the decision to pause the bill reflects a commitment to protecting accountability structures like the OSP, rather than eroding democratic principles.
