A Certified Counsellor and Pastoral Care Theologian, Foster Dela Gatsi, has sounded the alarm on the dangers of loneliness, stating that it is a major cause of psychosomatic disorders. Speaking on the Coping with Ease Show with Tony Mark-Boye on GBC Volta Star, Gatsi emphasized that loneliness can have severe consequences on one's mental and physical health for which reason it should be addressed.
According to Gatsi, loneliness can lead to anxiety, depression, and even physical ailments such as hypertension and diabetes. He stressed that it's essential for individuals to cultivate meaningful relationships and connections with others to mitigate the effects of loneliness. "Loneliness can be a silent killer, and it's crucial that we take proactive steps to address it," Gatsi warned.
Gatsi's comments come as no surprise, given the growing concern about mental health in Ghana. A recent study revealed that a significant number of persons in Ghana are experiencing mental illness, highlighting the need for increased awareness and support. The counsellor noted that loneliness is particularly prevalent among the elderly, who often experience social isolation and disconnection.
As a society, we need to prioritize building strong, supportive communities that foster connections and relationships. We must recognize the value of human connection and make conscious efforts to nurture it, balancing it with responsible digital consumption. Gatsi emphasized that mental illness is not a sign of weakness, and it's not something to be ashamed of. "We rather need to create a culture that encourages open discussion and seeks help when needed," he said.
Experts say that pastors are particularly vulnerable to mental health issues due to the demands of their role. Dr. Kwame Frimpong, a mental health clinician, advises pastors to prioritize self-care and seek support when needed. The Presbyterian Health Services has established a psychiatric hospital in the Upper East Region to increase accessibility to specialist psychiatric care.
For individuals struggling with loneliness and mental health issues, there are resources available. The Ho Mental Health Support Group offers counseling services and support groups, while the Volta Region Mental Health Association provides resources and advocacy for mental health awareness. By working together, we can build a more supportive and connected community for individual and communal thriving.
