The government has received praise from Dr. Robert Kofi Doh, a health professional and member of the ruling National Democratic Congress, for its commitment to completing at least 10 Agenda 111 hospitals and employing a backlog of nurses and teachers.
The announcement was made by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson during the presentation of the 2026 Budget Statement to Parliament. Dr. Forson stated that the government will prioritize the completion of existing facilities, including the La General Hospital, Effia Nkwanta Hospital, and Komfo Anokye Maternity Block.
A Step in the Right Direction
Speaking to the press, Dr. Doh said, "The government must sustain this momentum and ensure transparency in the allocation of resources, timely completion of projects, and equitable distribution of healthcare facilities across the country."
Healthcare Challenges in Ghana
According to Dr. Doh, Ghana's healthcare system faces significant challenges, including staff shortages, poor facility conditions, inadequate infrastructure, financial constraints, hospital-acquired infections, and medication errors.
"The completion of these hospitals will not only improve access to healthcare but also create employment opportunities for nurses and other health professionals," Dr. Doh explained.
Dr. Doh highlighted some of the key healthcare challenges in Ghana, including:
- Staff shortages, with many doctors unemployed and some hospitals facing severe staff shortages
- Poor facility conditions, with many hospitals and clinics lacking essential medical equipment, clean water, and proper sanitation
- Inadequate infrastructure, with only 5% of primary health facilities equipped with complete basic examination tools
- Financial constraints, with only 6.9% of the 2024 national budget allocated to health, far below the 15% Abuja Declaration target
- Hospital-acquired infections and medication errors, which are prevalent due to poor hand hygiene, inadequate sanitation, and overcrowded hospitals
Key Highlights
- Government to complete 10 Agenda 111 hospitals
- Employment opportunities for nurses and teachers
- Construction of six new regional hospitals
- Modernization of healthcare infrastructure
- Improved access to healthcare for Ghanaians
The government must ensure that these projects are completed on time and to the highest standards to address the country's healthcare needs effectively.
