Member of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Nana Kwame Gyantuah Esq., has taken a firm swipe at the recent tariff adjustments announced by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), describing them as unfair and inconsiderate.

His concerns stem from the latest increments, which include a 15.92% rise in water tariffs and a 9.86% increase in electricity charges.
According to him, these upward adjustments place an additional financial burden on already struggling households and businesses, especially at a time when income levels remain stagnant.

Speaking on GTV, Mr. Gyantuah Esq questioned the rationale behind raising tariffs without corresponding salary increments to cushion the public. He argued that while utilities continue to increase their charges, workers’ earnings have not seen any meaningful improvement, deepening the economic hardships of ordinary Ghanaians.

He stressed that it is unreasonable for government and regulatory bodies to expect citizens to absorb such hikes when their purchasing power has already been eroded.

Gyantuah further called on the government and the PURC to adopt a more humane and transparent approach in utility pricing. He urged them to prioritize efficiency within the utility agencies and address systemic challenges rather than shifting the cost to consumers.

Until salaries reflect current economic realities, he maintained, tariff increments will remain unjustifiable and will continue to fuel public frustration.
