Gynecologist Dr. Isaac Tetteh has emphasized the positive effects of contraceptives on women’s reproductive health, explaining that they play an important role in regulating the menstrual cycle and improving fertility in the long term.
Speaking on the GTV Breakfast Show, Dr. Tetteh stated that contrary to common misconceptions, contraceptives do not necessarily cause infertility, instead, they help to stabilize hormonal imbalances that often lead to irregular cycles and other reproductive issues. He added that when used appropriately under medical supervision, contraceptives can promote overall reproductive wellness.
Dr. Tetteh further explained that certain contraceptive methods help rest the ovaries and the uterine lining, preventing conditions such as ovarian cysts and endometriosis that can affect fertility later in life. He noted that these benefits contribute to preparing a healthier reproductive system when a woman decides to conceive. “When the body is given time to rest and balance hormonally, fertility can actually improve after discontinuing contraceptives,” he said, addressing the long-standing fears many women have about using birth control.
He, however, cautioned against self-medication and the misuse of contraceptives, stressing the need for professional guidance before choosing any birth control method.
Dr. Tetteh encouraged public education on reproductive health to help women make informed decisions about contraception. He concluded that contraceptives are not only tools for preventing pregnancy but also important instruments for managing women’s health and ensuring a balanced reproductive cycle.
