In the wake of widespread concerns about illegal mining (galamsey) and its impact on Ghana's water bodies, Lands Minister Samuel Abu Jinapor has assured the public of the safety of the country's tap water. During a recent interview, when quizzed on whether he would drink water from the tap, Jinapor confidently responded, "I drink it every day. Even this morning, I drank water from the tap."

His remark comes at a time when the effects of galamsey on rivers and other water sources have raised alarms about the safety of drinking water in affected areas. However, Jinapor's statement was aimed at restoring confidence in the measures the government is taking to address the menace and protect the environment.

The minister’s comments have sparked discussions, particularly within the #NoToGalamsey movement, which continues to call for more aggressive action to end illegal mining and safeguard the country's natural resources. Critics, while acknowledging his efforts, have questioned whether all Ghanaians have access to uncontaminated water, given the persistent environmental degradation caused by galamsey.

As the government ramps up efforts to combat illegal mining, Jinapor’s stance sends a message of determination and confidence in the ongoing fight, even as many remain concerned about the long-term sustainability of Ghana's water resources.
