Western Rod & Wire Ltd has clarified that Ghana already has an established local producer of aluminium wire rod, following recent discussions on the country’s aluminium industry and reliance on imported raw materials.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 24, 2026, the company welcomed initiatives aimed at strengthening Ghana’s aluminium value chain but emphasized the need for accurate recognition of existing local manufacturers contributing to the sector.

The clarification follows remarks attributed to the Finance Director of the Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) during the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources’ mid-year performance review meeting, suggesting that local cable manufacturers rely on imported aluminium wire rod.

Western Rod & Wire Ltd described the report as inaccurate, stating that VALCO has been supplying raw materials used for the production of aluminium wire rod to the company for more than two decades.

The company noted that it has been manufacturing aluminium rod in Ghana since 2005 and has consistently supplied the local market, supporting the growth of the downstream electrical cable industry.
According to Western Rod & Wire, its production capacity is sufficient to meet the requirements of Ghana’s cable manufacturing sector, helping to reduce dependence on imported aluminium rod while promoting local value addition, industrial employment, skills development, and import substitution.

While welcoming new investments in the aluminium sector, the company stressed that public discussions and policy decisions should acknowledge the contributions of existing manufacturers who have invested in Ghana’s industrial development over the years.

Western Rod & Wire Ltd reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ghana’s industrialization agenda and expressed readiness to engage stakeholders in discussions on the future of the aluminium industry to ensure decisions are based on accurate information and a comprehensive understanding of the sector.

The company further emphasized its willingness to contribute as a pioneer investor and manufacturer of aluminium rod and related products in shaping the future of Ghana’s aluminium industry.
