Tension is brewing among the 2023 graduates of Ghana’s public Colleges of Education as they prepare to stage a peaceful picketing exercise at the Ministry of Education on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
The graduates say they have been left unemployed for long, despite meeting all requirements for employment as professional teachers. They have successfully completed the four-year Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) program, passed the Ghana Teacher Licensure Examination (GTLE), and completed their one-year mandatory National Service in February 2025.
According to the group, they have written multiple letters to the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and the Ministry of Finance, followed by numerous in-person follow-ups. Yet, they have not received any proper response or clear timelines for their recruitment.
The graduates expressed further disappointment in the fact that their immediate seniors, who completed in 2022, received their financial clearance and postings as far back as May 2024, while the 2023 batch remains unattended to, even as July 2025 draws to a close.
Additionally, they said that assurances from the Director-General of GES, Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, that the budget for their recruitment had been submitted and approved, have not materialized into any action.
Their frustration was amplified after Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, failed to address teacher recruitment during the Midyear Budget Statement, leaving many to feel neglected by the very system they were trained to serve.
"We have written letters, followed up several times, and waited patiently, yet nothing has been done. It’s heartbreaking knowing our seniors were posted over a year ago, and here we are, still unemployed while classrooms lack teachers," said one concerned graduate.
The upcoming July 30 picketing, according to organizers, will be peaceful but resolute, aimed at drawing the attention of the Minister of Education and relevant authorities to take urgent action in releasing their financial clearance and postings.
