In a bold move to combat the scourge of illegal mining (galamsey), the Western Regional Police launched a dawn raid on two illegal mining sites at Avelebo and Akango. The operation, which was prompted by reports of pollution in the Ankobra River, resulted in the seizure of 10 excavators and the arrest of 15 suspects.

Notably, among the 15 suspects arrested were 7 foreign nationals, highlighting the transnational dimensions of the galamsey menace. The presence of foreign nationals in the illegal mining operations underscores the need for enhanced international cooperation to combat this environmental threat.

The raid is part of a broader effort to protect Ghana's environment and natural resources from the devastating effects of galamsey. The Ankobra River, which is a vital source of water for local communities, has been severely polluted by the activities of illegal miners. The police operation sends a strong message that the government will no longer tolerate the destruction of the environment and the flouting of the law.
