A shocking incident of violence has stirred outrage in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem (KEEA) Municipality after a female teacher was assaulted by a former student at St. John’s Catholic ‘B’ Basic School in Abrem Agona.
The victim, Madam Matilda Mensah, a Science teacher, was reportedly attacked on Friday, May 22, 2026, by James Mensah, a former pupil who recently completed the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Incident at School
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident began earlier in the day when the suspect, in the company of three other former students, visited the school premises. At the canteen, he allegedly behaved inappropriately toward the teacher, prompting her to caution him before leaving the area.
Later around 11:30 a.m., the suspect reportedly followed Madam Mensah into a classroom while she was teaching. When asked to leave, he refused and engaged her in a struggle. He allegedly overpowered her, held her by the neck, pushed her against a wall, and fled the scene.
The case was subsequently reported to the police, but no immediate arrest was made.
Threats Heighten Fear
The situation escalated the following evening when the suspect, accompanied by unidentified individuals, allegedly went to the teacher’s residence and issued threats. Witnesses reported hearing statements suggesting possible sexual violence, causing fear and anxiety for the victim and members of the school community.
GNAT Intervenes
Due to delays in police action, officials of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) in the KEEA Municipality stepped in.
The Municipal GNAT Secretary, Mr. Julius Kpodo, together with the Municipal Chairman, Mr. Henry Amartey, and the Agona Circuit COHBS Chairman, Mr. Francis Henry Hinankwa-Fosu, visited the school to gather firsthand information and reassure staff.
The team later proceeded to the suspect’s residence to engage his family. After obtaining his contact, the suspect was lured to a meeting point where he was apprehended following a brief struggle and subsequently handed over to the police.
Suspect in Custody
The suspect is currently in police custody and is expected to be arraigned before court as investigations continue.
Call for Justice
GNAT leadership has assured teachers and the public that the case will be pursued to its logical conclusion. The Association has called for calm while emphasizing its commitment to justice and safety for teachers.
They also urged the police to ensure swift and professional handling of the case.
Appreciation and Solidarity
GNAT expressed gratitude to the Central Regional Secretary, Mr. Martin Adonis Ajono, for his prompt response and support.
The Association further reaffirmed its solidarity with the teachers of St. John’s Catholic ‘B’ Basic School, assuring them of continued support during this difficult time.
