The Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, has commenced the payment of a monthly allowance of GH¢1,300 to Assembly Members across the country — a significant step towards strengthening local governance and fulfilling a key campaign promise made by President John Dramani Mahama.
This was announced by sector minister Ahmed Ibrahim at a press conference held on Monday, July 14, 2025. The move forms part of the broader "Resetting Ghana Agenda", aimed at empowering local governance structures and improving project monitoring at the grassroots level.
According to the Minister, GH¢23.6 million has already been disbursed to cover allowances for the months of April and May 2025, following the Ministry of Finance’s release of GH¢25 million as the first tranche of the GH¢100 million allocated for this initiative in the 2025 national budget.
> “The NDC government has allocated GH¢100 million in the 2025 budget statement and economic policy of Ghana to pay a monthly consolidated allowance to all Assembly Members in the country, both elected and appointed,” Mr. Ibrahim stated.
He emphasized that the allowance is designed not only to motivate the Assembly Members but also to equip them with financial resources and logistics to enhance the monitoring and evaluation of government projects, particularly those tied to the NDC's 2024 manifesto promises.
In total, 9,085 Assembly Members — both elected and appointed — will benefit from the monthly payments.
The initiative is seen as a direct fulfilment of a key campaign promise made by President Mahama during the 2024 elections. At the time, he assured local representatives of financial support in recognition of their critical role in ensuring transparency, accountability, and community development.
Public reaction to the announcement has been largely positive, especially among local government stakeholders, many of whom have long advocated for better remuneration to enable Assembly Members perform effectively.
This milestone is expected to boost morale among local representatives and is considered a significant achievement for the current administration in promoting inclusive governance.
