Peggy Ayelbassah, a young Ghanaian woman filled with hope and potential, had one simple goal: to become a nurse and serve her community. With documents in hand and determination in her heart, she set out to Salaga in the Savannah Region to attend an interview for admission into nursing college. It was supposed to be the first step in a lifelong journey of compassion and healing.

Peggy was murdered by armed robbers while en route to the interview a senseless killing that has sent shockwaves across the nation and sparked urgent conversations about safety, youth, and wasted potential. The same road that was meant to carry her into her future became the site of her final moments.

This heartbreaking incident is a grim reminder of how uncertain life can be in parts of Ghana where violence on the roads is becoming all too common. It also lays bare the illusion many of us live under the belief that planning, preparing, and dreaming big are enough to guarantee tomorrow.

Peggy’s story is not just personal; it is a reflection of a national crisis. Ghana’s youth arguably the country’s most valuable resource are not just seeking opportunities. They are taking bold steps toward self-development, often through education and skill acquisition. But when the very journey toward progress becomes a death sentence, we must ask: how are we protecting the dreams of the next generation?

Many young people wake up daily, face financial struggles, and still manage to find the courage to apply to schools, attend interviews, and chase careers that will help build the nation. But their safety on that journey can no longer be taken for granted.
