The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has issued a stern ultimatum to the government and security agencies, demanding the immediate arrest of social activist Ralph St Williams within 48 hours for allegedly assaulting a nurse at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital.
This demand comes in response to a viral video showing Ralph St Williams in a heated confrontation with health workers at the emergency ward of Ridge Hospital. In the footage, Ralph accused the nurses on duty of neglecting patients and described their conduct as lacking “a sense of urgency.”
The confrontation, which quickly escalated, sparked massive public reactions on social media, with many condemning the activist’s approach despite acknowledging challenges in the country’s healthcare system.
Following the incident, the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, visited Ridge Hospital and condemned the assault on health professionals, stressing that violence against medical staff will not be tolerated.
In a strongly worded statement, the GRNMA insisted that an attack on one nurse represents an attack on the entire profession and urged the government to take swift action.
"We are giving the government and the security agencies 48 hours to ensure the arrest of Ralph St Williams. Failure to do so will compel us to advise ourselves accordingly,” the association warned.
The association further emphasized that while citizens have every right to demand quality healthcare, no individual has the right to verbally or physically attack health professionals in the line of duty.
The call by GRNMA has heightened public discourse on patient rights, healthcare delivery, and the safety of health workers across the country.
