Sports journalist Amin Lamptey has disclosed that the late Ghanaian boxer Bahubali was earlier flagged as unfit to continue his career by former Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) President, Abraham Kotey Nii Quaye.

Speaking in an interview on Original TV, Lamptey revealed that Nii Quaye had refused to approve one of Bahubali’s previous fights after realizing the young boxer was not in the right condition to step into the ring. He noted that Bahubali had lost four bouts within a single year, which was a clear indication that he was not ready for further competitive fights.

Lamptey further explained that Bahubali was at a point suspended for 28 days but served only 8 days of the sanction before being allowed to fight again, a move he suggested undermined the boxer’s welfare and safety.

According to him, the GBA sometimes demanded medical reports such as brain scans from boxers’ camps, but there had been instances where such reports were forged to allow boxers to compete. He added that when some of these irregularities were questioned, camps could react aggressively, sometimes threatening or even assaulting officials.

Bahubali tragically passed away recently after suffering internal bleeding from his last bout, sparking conversations about safety and regulatory enforcement in Ghana’s boxing industry.
