A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) military helicopter has crashed in the Mwihoko area of Githurai, Nairobi County, on Thursday afternoon, with multiple casualties feared. The incident occurred around 3:10 PM, sending shockwaves through the quiet residential neighborhood.

Residents reported hearing a loud explosion followed by thick plumes of smoke billowing from a nearby thicket.

“We heard a huge bang and rushed to the scene. The chopper was already on fire and several bodies could be seen,” recounted one eyewitness who arrived moments after the crash.

Videos and photos circulating on social media show a section of the aircraft engulfed in flames, with rescue workers battling the blaze and trying to reach victims.

A multi-agency emergency team comprising the Kenya Red Cross, firefighters, and KDF personnel swiftly responded to the crash site. The area has since been cordoned off to facilitate recovery operations and investigations.

Sources indicate that the chopper was on a routine training mission when it reportedly experienced technical difficulties, leading to the tragic accident. The Kenya Defence Forces has not yet released the exact number of personnel on board or confirmed the number of fatalities.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that an official investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crash. Preliminary inquiries will focus on potential technical malfunctions, pilot error, or adverse weather conditions at the time of the flight.

In the meantime, the government has urged the public to avoid speculating on the incident and allow investigators to carry out their duties.

Further updates are expected as authorities gather more information and notify the families of those involved.
