Cape Coast - Asebu Catholic Basic School has emerged as the winner of the Okatakyi Amanfi VII Silver Jubilee Anniversary competition, held as part of dual celebrations for the 2025 Apeyamkese festival and the Paramount Chief's 25th anniversary.

The event, which occurred on Friday, October 24, 2025, at the Aggrey Memorial Zion Senior High School Assembly Hall, aimed to evaluate pupils' knowledge of Mathematics, Science, English, General Knowledge, as well as Fante, which focused on the traditions, customs, and culture of the Asebu people. The program sought to promote youth participation in the festival.

Out of eight invited schools, seven participated: Moree D/A Basic 'A', Akonoma D/A Basic, Putubiw D/A Basic, Asebu Catholic Basic, Old Ebu-Brebia D/A Basic, Amosima Methodist Basic, and Asebu Aponsie D/A Basic. Asebu Ekroful Catholic Basic School was absent.

The schools were divided into two groups for the initial round. From group A, Amosima Methodist Basic (49 points) and Asebu Catholic Basic (38 points) advanced to the final. From group B, Asebu Aponsie D/A Basic (50 points) and Old Ebu-Brebia D/A Basic (49 points) qualified.

In the grand finale, Asebu Catholic Basic claimed victory with 45 points. Old Ebu-Brebia D/A Basic followed as first runner-up with 42 points, with Amosima Methodist Basic (38 points) and Asebu Aponsie D/A Basic (37 points) as second and third runners-up, respectively.

Senior High School Debate Falters

A planned senior high school debate on the topic "Galamsey And Its Effects on The Environment" failed to materialize as only one of the four invited schools—Abakrampa SHS—attended. The school was awarded the ultimate prize by default.

The 3 schools that failed to attend the programme were: Aggrey Memorial Zion SHS, Moree SHS, and Aburaman SHS.

Stakeholders Emphasize Education and Tradition

Nana Prof. Yemoah II, Chief of Nframandwe, presented awards to the winning schools on behalf of the Asebu Traditional Council. He admonished students to take their studies seriously, describing education as a "leveller" for future success.

Mr. Regionald Otoo, a science teacher at the winning Asebu Catholic School, detailed the rigorous preparation his pupils underwent. "We had to inculcate a winning mentality in them to emerge victorious," he stated, while urging parents to support their children's educational pursuits.

The quiz mistress, Madam Dina Tetteh (Abura Asebu Kwaamankese District Coordinator for Guidance and Counselling and the Girls Education Officer), applauded the pupils' performance but noted a lack of familiarity with local customs. "I'm pleading with all stakeholders to assist our kids to be conversant with our norms, traditions, and customs," she stressed ,adding that is what defines us as a people. "

Ogyeahɔhɔo Kofi Amanyi IV, Chief of Moree Alata and Secretary to the Anniversary Planning Committee, explained the quiz was a fitting tribute to the Paramount Chief, an academic known for supporting education.

Contestant representative Anabel Yarkwa Quansah expressed her team's elation, thanking God for their success and encouraging her peers to take their studies seriously.

The Okatakyi Amanfi VII Silver Jubilee and Apeyamkese Festival celebrations will culminate in a grand durbar of chiefs on November 22, followed by a thanksgiving service on November 23, 2025.
