Port Vale F.C. produced one of the biggest surprises of the competition after defeating Sunderland A.F.C. 1–0 in the fifth round of the FA Cup over the weekend.

The decisive moment came in the 28th minute when Port Vale striker Ben Waine found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into celebration and putting the League One side ahead against their higher-ranked opponents.

Sunderland tried to respond quickly and dominated large parts of the game, creating several chances in search of an equalizer. However, Port Vale’s defence remained disciplined throughout the match, frustrating the visitors and protecting their narrow lead until the final whistle.

The result marks a historic moment for Port Vale, who have now reached the FA Cup quarter-finals for the first time in decades. The victory is even more remarkable considering the significant gap between the two clubs in the English football league system.

For Sunderland, the defeat brings an abrupt end to their FA Cup campaign despite entering the match as clear favorites.

Port Vale will now look ahead to the quarter-final draw, hoping their impressive cup run can continue as they chase a potential trip to Wembley.
