Iran Football Federations is in talk with FIFA for the possibility of moving its 2026 World Cup matches from United States to Mexico, citing concerns over security. Officials from the Iranian Football Federation say they’ve opened talks with FIFA to see if the change could be made, especially after recent political tensions have raised worries about the team’s safety on U.S. soil.
Mexico’s government has said it would welcome Iran’s matches, offering stadiums and support if FIFA approves the move. But FIFA has so far pushed back, stressing that the tournament is set to take place across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada as planned, and that changing venues now would be a huge logistical challenge.
Iran is scheduled to play in Group G against Belgium, Egypt, and New Zealand, with matches currently set in Los Angeles and Seattle. The discussions have sparked a lot of attention, but for now, FIFA has firmly pushed back against the proposal to move Iran’s World Cup games to Mexico.

The organization has made it clear that the 2026 tournament will proceed as originally scheduled across the U.S., Mexico, and Canada, noting that changing individual match locations would cause significant logistical challenges.
While FIFA remains in communication with all participating teams, including Iran, it has not approved any venue changes and expects all matches to be played according to the current schedule.
The situation highlights how off-field issues can sometimes clash with major sporting events, leaving fans and teams waiting to see how it will all unfold.
