Galatasaray S.K. secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Liverpool F.C. in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round-of-16 clash in Istanbul on Tuesday night.

The only goal of the match came early in the seventh minute when midfielder Mario Lemina headed home from close range following a corner, giving the Turkish champions an important advantage.

Liverpool pushed for an equaliser and created several chances, but their efforts were frustrated by Galatasaray’s solid defence and goalkeeper Ugurcan Çakır. Both teams also had goals ruled out during the game after VAR reviews.

Liverpool will now be aiming to overturn the deficit in front of their home supporters as the two sides prepare for the return leg next week, where a place in the next round of Europe’s elite club competition will be at stake.
