The Chief Executive Officer of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors (CBOD), Dr Patrick Ofori, says Ghana remains relatively stable in petroleum supply compared to some African countries, despite concerns about limited stock levels.

Speaking on the KeyPoints with Alfred Ocansey on April 4. Dr. Ofori explained that while Ghana’s reserves may appear low, the country is in a better position than others in the region.

He cited countries like Kenya and South Africa, which are currently facing tighter supply conditions.
“As we speak, Kenya has about 16 days of fuel cover. When you compare that to Ghana, you realise we are in a relatively better position,” he said.

However, he pointed out that Ghana’s ability to increase its fuel reserves is constrained by infrastructure limitations, particularly in storage and port capacity.

“We don’t have the facilities to stock beyond about three months. Even if a large vessel is made available, we would struggle to discharge and store the products,” Dr. Ofori explained.

According to him, the country’s petroleum system has consistently operated within similar stock ranges over time, whether during global disruptions like the Russia-Ukraine War or other supply shocks.

He stressed that the focus should not only be on the number of weeks of fuel cover but also on strengthening infrastructure to improve long-term energy security.
