The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is set to roll out a GH¢240 million transformer upgrade project across parts of Accra, with planned power outages expected as the works begin this week.
The ECG said this forms part of efforts to improve power supply reliability.
The project will involve upgrading twelve transformers across six key substations, including Adenta, La, Teshie-Nungua, Nmai-Dzor, Baatsonaa and Lashibi.
According to ECG, the transformers will be upgraded from 20/26 MVA to 30/39 MVA, a move expected to significantly boost capacity and reduce frequent system overloads in rapidly growing areas.
However, the company has indicated that the upgrade works will require planned power outages in affected communities. These include parts of East Legon Hills, Nanakrom, Borteyman, Lakeside, Katamanso, Teshie, Nungua, Lashibi Baatsonaa and nearby areas.
ECG says the outages will be carried out in phases over a three-day period, with each customer expected to experience up to six hours without power.
The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, April 8, and run through to Friday, April 10, 2026.
